External preservative treatment pastes are available to preserve the ground-line area of in-service utility poles. This zone, 2 inches above ground to 20 inches below ground, is especially susceptible to decay because of the combination of moisture, oxygen and decay fungi in this area. Modern preservative pastes contain Tebuconazole and Propiconazole, or a copper based preservative, for surface treatment in combination with a diffusible preservative such as Disodium Tetraborate Decahydrate. Most are broad spectrum in their control of insects and decay. They are also highly concentrated so that a small amount will provide targeted protection. Typically poles are inspected and treated on a 10 year cycle. Click to see Introducing WP101-PRO pdf.
